Punjab (Gidroshia Point) The President of National Party Punjab , Ayub Malik, has strongly condemned the killing of a couple in Balochistan in the name of honour demanding of the government to take strict measures to prevent reoccurrence of such incidents.
In a statement issued on Monday, Malik said that it was very unfortunate that the incident happened weeks ago and authorities turned a blind eye to this. “The way the couple was executed clearly indicates that there is a rule of jungle in parts of Balochistan, and it also shows that the culprits have a strong sense of impunity.”
Malik demanded that all those who have been involved in these heinous killings should be arrested and punished in accordance with the law. “In addition to that, the government should strictly implement the ruling of the Supreme Court that declared the Jirga system illegal in the past.”
He said that the state should also ensure that the culprits do not invoke the articles of law related to blood money to avoid punishment. In many such cases, blood money law is invoked, or culprits simply are pardoned. “No such invocation should be allowed here because it would strengthen their sense of impunity, making women more vulnerable in our society.”
The NP president of Punjab chapter bemoaned the attitude of some circles in Punjab who are using this issue to defame the Baloch national movement. “Killings in the name of honour are not confined to only one particular federating unit, but it is happening in various parts of the country. It is important to understand its underlying factors instead of blaming any particular nation.”
Malik observed patriarchy and its pernicious tentacles must be broken if the country really wants to protect women and their rights. “Without abolishing patriarchy and getting rid of patriarchal attitudes, this problem can not be resolved.”
